4 Ways to Use Tumblr to Connect With Customers

I read this today on Social Media Examiner I thought it may be something you could use.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn–these are the darlings of the content marketing and social media worlds.

But one platform is almost never mentioned.

It is Tumblr, a network ideal for photo and video integration, as well as reaching out to a niche demographic.

Benefits of Being on Tumblr

Tumblr boasts 39 million users, half of whom are under the age of 25. Since the bigger social networks have more varied demographics, it offers marketers a chance to connect with a defined audience.

And because photos and videos are proven to be more engaging than text online, this micro-blogging site is the perfect place to connect with users on more than one front.

With the introduction of ads that appear as highlighted posts, as well as the fact that Adidas just ran the first-ever large-scale brand campaign on the site, Tumblr is likely to keep on gaining traction and influence.

Let’s see which other brands have used Tumblr to their advantage, and how you can emulate their success.

#1: Use High-Quality Images to Promote Products

For retailers and online merchants, Tumblr is a great place to link up with consumers. For example, ModCloth, an indie clothing company, uses high-quality photos of its merchandise to entice followers to make a purchase.

On a post about polka-dotted dresses, shirts and headbands that the company sells, there were 131 notes comprised of re-blogs and shares.

modcloth photosModCloth’s photos of merchandise frequently receive a high number of shares.

Another company showcasing its products beautifully on Tumblr is Urban Outfitters. The brand simply lets its photos speak for themselves, selling the product without being overbearing to followers.

On some of the photos, which link to product pages on its website, there are upwards of 8,500 notes.

urban outfitters pageOn Urban Outfitters’ page, customers are directed to the website via beautiful images.

Customers don’t want to be sold products in an aggressive manner by businesses on social media platforms. They’d rather read interesting information, or in the cases of Urban Outfitters and ModCloth, look at pretty pictures.

#2: Post News and Information in Photo Form to Reach Visual Thinkers

Tumblr meshes well with fashion retailers and highly visual brands, but the site does not cater to text-based businesses. Companies heavily focused on words and information would not do well by posting 1,000-word articles on the site.

But wordsmiths shouldn’t fret because, oddly enough, news outlets have found their niche on Tumblr as well. Once businesses figure out how to replace words with images, they’ve struck gold.

The Entertainment Weekly Tumblr blog is nothing but a stream of large images. A recent post about the show Weeds ending included a photo of Mary-Louise Parker (aka Nancy Botwin) and a short paragraph with a summary of the news.

If users want to, they can click the photo to be linked to an article. On the official website, there is a small photo of Parker along with the 500-word story.

entertainment weekly newsOn EW’s Tumblr, a large photo and short paragraph are how the brand spreads the news.
entertainment weekly websiteEW’s website, however, is full of text and a smaller photo of Mary-Louise Parker.

Tumblr users don’t like lengthy text pieces on their blog rolls. This is why a Tumblr blog helps companies producing information to reach a different audience—one that is visually oriented and might not spend the time to read.

#3: Add Personality to the Posts to Endear Your Brand to Followers

Just like other social media sites, on Tumblr, brands have free rein to be more personal with their followers than, let’s say, on network television.

The TODAY Show blog does just that—they combine funny captions with newsy images.

today show tumblrShowing a little personality goes a long way with followers on Tumblr.

After the company rep running TODAY‘s blog posted the headline, “Beagle goes for walk, comes back with human skull,” and wrote, “Beagles are the best,” a follower replied, “Seriously, whoever runs the Today Show Tumblr is awesome at life.”

The rep then came back at the commenter with, “Really? I don’t know. I just got abnormally excited for a fake Hillary Clinton sighting.”

today show hillary sightingJokes are an integral part of the TODAY Show’s Tumblr.

The posts are fun and humorous on the TODAY Show Tumblr, and because of this, it receives on average more than 100 notes per post. The show gets it right on the site where the top blogs have mostly been associated with humor.

tumblr humor blogTumblr is a fun place, as demonstrated by the popularity of its humor-based blogs.

Tumblr gives TODAY and other entities the freedom of inbound marketing, as opposed to outbound marketing, which is what the show is used to.

Instead of talking at viewers, it’s engaging in conversation with them. This is a tactic that will strengthen the relationship between the company and the consumer.

#4: Give Followers a Behind-the-Scenes Look to Make Them Feel Part of the Brand

The NBA and other brands utilize Tumblr to show customers a behind-the-scenes look at events and how they run. On its Tumblr, “NBA Through the Lens,” customers can see games from different angles and view scenes from the locker room.

nba court actionNBA fans get special treatment on Tumblr, where they can see exclusive on- and off-court action.

Boqueria, a New York City restaurant, illustrates to followers how to make certain dishes from their menu in video form on its Tumblr.

In a recent video posted at the end of May, its executive chef demonstrated what goes into cooking croquettes.

boqueria videoCooking videos posted by Boqueria offer followers interesting information about food.

Marketers must give in order to receive, whether they’re posting exclusive photos or demonstration videos.

Tumblr is an ideal place to strengthen brand loyalty. As Lauren Drell of Mashable writes, “Now more than ever, people want to know from whom they’re buying products, so Tumblr is a great way to let them see how great your company is. This helps build loyalty—and your bottom line.”

Final Thoughts…

Tumblr offers a distinctive platform for brands. It affords them the opportunity to reach a specific demographic, easily post photos and videos and reinforce the relationship between them and customers.

The up-and-coming micro-blog is equally beneficial to the company and the consumer.

What do you think? Now that you’ve read about the advantages of Tumblr, do you think you’d use it in your marketing plan? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

5 Ways To Drive Traffic To Your Site.

You now have your website online, your landing page is ready with your web form connected to your autoresponder. Now what do you do? You now need visitors to your new website, but how do you do this? Here are 5 helpful ideas on how to drive traffic to your site.

1. Article marketing. You need to write an article of about 300-600 words on a subject connected in some way to what you about to offer people on your website. This way when people read your article they will want to visit your site to find out more. Once you have written your article you must get it published. There are lots of ezine directory sites out there. My personal favourite is ezine articles.com which is one of the biggest. With the right keywords in your articles, you should soon see your article being listed in google for those keywords. Google loves these ezine sites as they are full of content, therefore if your article is on the site it will be picked up by google. When you are listing your article in the ezine directories you are giving a chance to promote your site in a resource box at the bottom of your article. Do not use this box to promote yourself just direct people to visit your website, that is what you want them to do after all.

2. Video marketing. This is another great way to get traffic to your site, with some people getting massive results. The basics are that you make a video upload it to a site like you tube with a link to your website underneath. But there is more to it of course, some people are not comfortable in front of the camera.

This is not a problem as you can make screen capture videos. With these videos you can show somebody how to do things like posting an article to an ezine for example. Just take them step by step with you speaking of course telling them how to go through the process. These type of videos are very popular as you are giving the viewer value and helping them with a problem they are having. There are also sites where you can make videos where you just add your pictures, text and music and you have an instant video. Animoto is one of these sites, you can make a 30 second video for free which is enough time to get your message across.

3. Forum Marketing. Another good way to get traffic to your site is to go on the forums. You have a look at the problems people are having and if you know how to help them post a reply to them. When you post a reply people will see your signature at the bottom of the reply with a link to your website.

Hopefully if you have giving them good value in your reply people will click on your link to see what else you can help them with. A warning though, don’t just post replies anywhere to get your link noticed. If you don’t know anything on a certain subject do not post as you will just be seen as a spammer and you will be ignored by others on the forum.

4. Social Media. If you have not started using social media to get traffic to your site you are missing out on a lot of potential traffic. What is social media? Facebook, twitter, you tube digg, etc.. there are hundreds of social media sites out there.

Lets take Facebook as an example, they have over 500 million members worldwide, that is a lot of potential traffic to your website. So if you haven’t already, sign up for a facebook account today. I could write a whole other article on facebook marketing (I probably will) but get on there and start adding friends and get yourself noticed. Which brings me to my final tip.

5. Personal Branding. This is what it sounds like, getting yourself seen on the internet. Always make sure you have a nice profile picture of yourself. Stick with the same photo on all the different sites and people will remember your photo and may click your link to find out more about you.

This is where having your own personal website to send people is invaluable. A who is site is a great way to tell people more about you and what you are involved in. You must have an about me page on this site, just tell people all about you, your interests, hobbies family etc… and a few more photos helps as well. People will get to know you better and trust you enough to have a look at what you are promoting. This is only a small part of personal branding but it is something you should seriously think about.

What’s Your Strength?

Do you ever get those days where you just don’t know where to turn? There is so much to do but you are being torn five different ways by all the advice you are receiving from different people.

If you listened to them all you would be working 24 hours a day on this business building thing. But what do you do next? The only advice I would give anyone is to stick to something you don’t find a chore doing. Find out what your strength is.

article writingIf for instance you like writing articles, concentrate on article writing and making sure that your quality content is being seen by as many pairs of eyes as possible. This means of course getting your hands dirty by doing all the work getting things into place, like using onlywire or pixelpipe for mass distribution of your content.

This does mean you will have to join all the social network sites like Digg, Stumbleupon etc… This may take you a day to plough through but once it’s done it’s done. Or you can get it done for 5 dollars at fiverr.com where someone is willing to do all the boring stuff for you. You are now in a position to get your content spread all over the internet at the press of a button.

To get even more distribution of your articles you can even join a tribe. If you are not familiar with tribes it is where a group of people get together and distribute each others content. This can result in a massive amount of views of your articles and of course you have your links to what you are selling in the resource box at the bottom of your article. I use tribe pro check it our here. They have a free version and also an upgraded version. Try it out for free then upgrade later when you see the results.

You may not like article marketing at all but you may enjoy something like social media marketing on facebook or twitter. If this is your preference there is plenty of free advice going out there on how to market on facebook. Try this free course from Jo Barnes, you will also learn how to create your own facebook page and be given free templates. It’s worth a look if you are new to social media marketing.

If you are consistent in your marketing you will be able to generate a stream of traffic to your website and hopefully capture peoples details to build your list. If you need some help with list building I have a great free gift for you, click here and you will be able to watch a video that will explain how you can have your own free list building website.

Your audience is the lifeblood of your business, and knowing who they are and what they want is a key to success.

What you might not know is that there’s a treasure trove of knowledge about your ideal audience hidden in the sea of followers and fans you’ve already attracted.

Here are four ways you can learn more about your audience by looking at their social media life.

#1: How Do They Describe Themselves?

Look at their bios on their social networks. How do they describe themselves? What are they passionate about? This may be obvious, but most of the users you’ll run into take this space very seriously, and the short (often < 200 character) bio is a precious piece of real estate.

By analyzing your followers’ bios, you can get a deeper look into the things that they value most highly about themselves.

For example, if they devote a lot of space to their location, you can assume that they have local ties that are important to them. You might want to develop appropriate location-based marketing tactics here.

hack ogden bio pic location focusedHack Ogden’s bio is packed to the brim with local-focused terms.

And if they spend more time talking about their projects or achievements, you might want to look into adding gamification elements to your site.

kevin rose achievement focused bioKevin Rose’s bio is devoted primarily to his accomplishments.

As you can see, you can discover useful information to improve your marketingwhen you study social media bios.

A great tool to find out how your audience members describe themselves is Followerwonk.

This tool pulls a report of a startling amount of information about your Twitter followers, which you can use to develop your ideal audience persona.

Check out the bio word-cloud section of the Followerwonk report. This gives you a useful overview of how your followers describe themselves. Use this information to tailor your content to their interests and adjust your marketing tactics.

#2: When Are They Most Socially Active?

Knowing when your fans are online and active is a key component of effective content delivery. Social media moves so quickly that tweets, posts and pins can get lost in the flood of information in your fans’ social streams.

5 minutes of waiting twitter83 new tweets popped up in my timeline in just 5 minutes.

For example, if they’re most active during normal business hours, you can reasonably assume that social media is part of their job, so in-depth articles focused on advanced strategies and tactics could do well.

And it’s certainly worth knowing when people want to read your content.

A great tool to find out when your audience is most socially active is Tweriod.

There are countless (really, I tried counting!) tools out there that will tell you when your followers are online, but none are as extensive and detailed as Tweriod.

The basic Tweriod report is free, but you can also opt for a more advanced report for a few bucks. The free report is sufficient for most needs, but if you want to get detailed information about the performance of your tweets and not just your followers’ schedules, the premium report is worth the price.

tweriod most active reportThe ideal time for me to reach my audience during the week is 12:00 PM PST.

#3: Whom Do They Listen To?

Engaging the top social influencers in your business niche is one of the quickest ways to get your message in front of your ideal audience. A key quote from a prominent member of your niche’s community can spark massive amounts of engagement and traffic.

For example, a story flew around the Internet last year about rapper 50 Cent, who tweeted about a company he’d invested in. His series of tweets bumped up the value of the company he promoted by 240%.

50 cent stock tweetCan you imagine what a tweet like this could do for your business?

In some niches, the influencers can be easy to pick out. However, these icons are often nigh unreachable for your average business. So how can you find influencers in your niche who are both reachable and influential?

A great tool to discover whom your audience listens to is Klout topic pages.

Klout topic pages are community-moderated, concise and well-curated lists of the top influencers on specific topics. For all the flak about Klout being arbitrary, it’s pretty strongly indicative of the true influencers in the topics it covers.

klout topic pagesKlout has a concise list of the influencers on nearly every topic you could imagine.

#4: What Content Do They Want?

Perhaps the most telling thing you can learn about your audience comes from a look at which niche social sites they frequent. Not only can this help you learn about their interests, it can also help you dig deeper into the kind of content they want by the networks they favor.

For example, if your audience frequents sites like Quora and LinkedIn Answers, they are likely to favor hands-on problem solving and expert opinions. In this case, consider writing content with this in mind to net deeper engagement and more true fans.

quora top followersThe top answerers and followers section on Quora can be a good place to look for your audience. Are they here?

And if your audience frequents sites like Dribbble and Pinterest, they’re likely interested in design, crafts and aesthetics. In this case, you should consider adding high-quality original photography and art to your blog posts.

The best way to find out what kind of content your audience wants is to use your brain. As far as I can tell, there isn’t another tool yet that will examine this on a large scale.

For an easy solution, run a survey on your site with a widget like KISSinsights andask your audience which smaller social sites they like to visit. Then, take a look at the content that does best on these sites and try to reproduce it on your own site.

Try to identify the aspects of these sites that resonate with your readers. Create content that matches the most successful content on these social sites and see how it affects your audience. And with that information comes engagement.

What do you think? How can you learn about your audience with social media? We’d love to hear your thoughts! Leave your questions and comments in the box below.
